私の好きな1枚です。
空の色に透明感があって、手前に干した反物もなんだかゆったりしています。
春の作品ですが、ゆったり垂れる柳の枝には緑の新芽がぽつぽつ出たばかり。
This is one of my favorites.
I like its sky, that looks almost translucent.
Fabrics in the front are swinging lightly.
It seems very peaceful.
It's an early spring.
Willow branches, drooping gently, are lined with tiny green buds.
ここは浅草橋近く馬喰町の初音の馬場。
This is Hatuneno Baba in Bakuro-cho town, near Asakusa Bridge.

初音の馬場は江戸で最も古い馬場で、関ヶ原の戦いの際には家康がここで馬揃えを行ったとか。
Hatsuneno Baba was the oldest Baba (horseback-riding ground) in Edo, where Tokugawa Ieyasu held Umazoroe Ceremony (horse marching ceremony) before the decisive battle of Sekigahara in 1600.
でも広重の時代、ここは馬場とは名ばかりの広場。
脇には火の見櫓も建てられていました。
子供や犬の格好の遊び場となっていたようです。
But in Hiroshige's time, it was no longer a riding ground.
It was just an open space in a crowded town, where children and dogs could play.
They even built a fire-watch tower.

にぎやかな街中でちょっとほっとできる場所だったんでしょうね。
赤矢印で示したのが染物屋さん。
前の通りにも反物が干してありますよね。
森川和夫氏によれば、広重の絵は多分そこから描かれたんじゃないかということです。
私もそう思います。
We can tell it was a peaceful oasis in the very busy neighborhood.
The red arrow points to a dyer's shop.
Can you see they are drying their fabrics on the street?
According to Kazuo Morikawa, that's where Hiroshige was standing, and I agree with him.
さあ馬喰町へ行ってみましょう。
Now, let's go to Bakuro-cho town.
まずはJR総武線の浅草橋駅で降りて。
I started off from JR Asakusabashi Station.

初音の馬場の名は近くにあった初音森神社からつけられました。
The name Hatsuneno Baba comes from the nearby Hatsunenomori Shrine.

ところで、馬喰町は日本有数の衣類の問屋街です。
Today, Bakuro-cho is one of the largest fashion wholesale districts in Japan.

小さなお店がぎっしり並んだ通り lots of small stores, and

こちらはエトワール海渡のビル群
ファッションから雑貨までお店づくりをサポートする総合卸だそうです。
many big buildings of ETOILE Kaito
(According to their website, they are the large membership cash and carry wholesaler.)
馬喰町は今でもやっぱりにぎやかな町でした。
というわけで、昔と今を比較してみましょう。
So, Bakuro-cho town was still a very busy town.
Let's compare then and now.

空は青くてきれいでしたが、他には昔を彷彿とさせるものは何もありませんでした。
The sky was beautiful, but there was nothing that reminds us of the old days.
