9月２７日の御嶽山の水蒸気噴火では多くの犠牲者が出ました。
紅葉シーズンの晴れた週末、それもお昼時というタイミングを恨めしく思いながら、ニュースを見て胸を痛めています。
On Sep. 27, Mt. Ontake erupted due to a "phreatic explosion" and many hikers were killed.
The casualties were high, because it unfortunately happened around sunny Saturday noon, in this beautiful foliage season.
I'm very sorry for the victims and their families.
9月はじめに裏磐梯を旅行した時には、もちろんそんなことが起こるとは知るべくもなく。
ただ私はそこで初めて「水蒸気噴火」という言葉を知ったのでした。
When I visited Urabandai in early September, I never knew this would happen.
But it was when I first learned the word "phreatic explosion."
今からおよそ１２０年前、１８８８年に磐梯山で「水蒸気噴火」がありました。
その噴火で磐梯山の中の小磐梯が山体崩壊。
岩屑なだれを起こしました。
ふもとの川や小川がせき止められ、およそ３００もの新しい湖や沼ができたそうです。
About 120 years ago, in 1888, Mt. Bandai in Fukushima erupted due to a "phreatic" explosion.
One of the peaks collapsed and caused debris avalanche.
Rivers and streams were dammed, and about 300 new lakes and marshes were created.

裏磐梯にある大小たくさんの湖が、わずか１２０年ほど前の噴火によってできたとはびっくりしました。
I was surprised to know those lakes in the area, big and small, were created by the eruption only 120 years ago.

桧原湖 Lake Hibara
有名な五色沼もその時にできたものです。
およそ４キロの五色沼自然探勝路を歩いてきました。
Goshiki-numa (Five-Color-Ponds) is a famous touring spot in Urabandai.
We hiked the 4-kilometer Goshiki-numa Ponds Nature Trail.
赤いラインが五色沼自然探勝路です。 The red line in the center is the trail.
さすが五色沼というだけあって…。

本当に水の色が違うのでびっくりしました。
I didn't understand why, but each pond was in different color.
噴火後すっかり荒地となっていたこの地の緑化に挑戦したのが遠藤現夢（えんどうげんむ）。
１９１０年ころ２年をかけておよそ１０万本の木を植えたそうです。
おかげで一帯は今では豊かな森となっています。
The area was barren for a while after the eruption.
Around 1910, a man named Endo Genmu tried to reforest the area.
He kept planting more than 100 thousand trees over two years.
Thanks to him, the area is a rich forest now.

遠藤現夢のお墓と磐梯山噴火でなくなった犠牲者慰霊の碑が柳沼の近くにあります。
His grave and also a monument to the disaster of the eruption stand near Yanagi-numa pond.

後ろの大きな黒い石が墓石です。噴火のときに落下した石だそうです。
The big blackish rock in the center is his tombstone. It's one of the huge rocks that came down at the explosion.
火山の威力のすごさ、それでも負けずに立ち上がった人間のたくましさを感じた旅でした。
I was amazed by the power of volcanic activity, and also by the indomitable power of human spirits.
